📐 How the Power Rankings Are Calculated

Transparent, objective, and 100% data-driven methodology
🛡️ 100% Objective & Automated: These rankings are generated strictly by computer algorithm directly from official final game scores. There are no human voters, committee opinions, or manual adjustments—every team is evaluated by the exact same mathematical formula.
⚖️ 1. Equal 1500 Baseline

Every team begins at an identical baseline Power Index of 1500. Between seasons, ratings revert toward the 1500 league mean so each new roster earns its standing on the ice.

🔄 2. Opponent Strength (Elo Model)

Ratings update after every game based on the quality of the opponent. Beating a higher-ranked team earns a larger boost than beating a lower-ranked team, and upsets result in a larger rating transfer.

🏒 3. No Running Up the Score

Margin of victory is scaled using a diminishing square-root curve (√Goal Diff). Decisive wins are rewarded, but running up the score in a blowout yields minimal extra rating points.

⏱️ 4. Overtime & Shootouts

A regulation win awards 100% of the game outcome credit, while an Overtime or Shootout win splits the outcome credit (75% to the winner, 25% to the OT/SO loser) to reflect a tightly contested game.

🏆 5. Game Type Weighting

Regular season and tournament round-robin games carry standard weight (1.0×), while elimination and playoff games carry a 1.5× multiplier to reflect championship play.

📅 6. Strength of Schedule (SOS)

Because every game exchange accounts for the opponent's rating, a team playing a tough schedule is never unfairly penalized for close games against elite competition.
